Building a Backyard Pond With A Waterfall

A landscape design company can provide backyard pond and waterfall construction, with fish, lighting, and more for your New Jersey property so you are able to experience what you imagine all year round without the stress of doing it yourself. Using a professional landscaping company ensures that the pond you choose compliments the rest of your landscape and goes with the current design and layout you have in place. It is better to have a beautiful garden pond that is versatile and able to grow, rather than one that is stationary and limited.

Backyard garden ponds come in many shapes, sizes and styles. Some ponds can only be used for a certain amount of time each year. Others may be able to withstand drastic temperature changes, such as those found during the summer and winter months. There are ponds available that are designed for waterfalls, fountains, or even water cascades, but many people prefer to have a pond that sits in the landscape and allows natural landscape features to blend in and enhance its beauty. There are different options available to satisfy every personal preference for their backyard garden pond.

If you have purchased a preformed garden pond, you will need to properly prepare the area where it will be situated before placing any aquatic plants or other features in the area. This will include removing any existing vegetation, sand or dirt from the area, and making sure there is not overhanging tree branches or underground piping that could potentially fall into the pond. If you are using a garden pump or filtration system, you will also need to test the equipment prior to installation. An automatic testing system should be included with your purchase of the pond liner or accessories, but if you did not receive one with your purchase, you should ask to be sent one.

Once the area is free of debris and any other garden features are in place, the next step is to begin digging. If you have purchased a kit from a garden store, you may be able to dig the pond yourself with a garden trowel and a hole punch. If you are attempting to do this on your own, it is important to remember that it can take several days to weeks before the actual digging is complete. If you plan on installing a filter, pump, or other garden water feature, you may have to double dig the pond again after the initial digging is completed to allow the water to settle. Once the pond has been dug to the proper depth, you will be ready to install the aquatic garden features.

The next step is to select a spot for the pond that has rocks and a ladder if needed to reach the top of the pond. Since this pond will not be completely covered with water, you will need a flat area with some degree of privacy. The depth of the pond will be dependent upon the size of the rocks you select and the amount of space available. If you do not have rocks that are large enough to handle, consider using stones that are slightly larger than your pond to give your landscaping a smooth look.

Once you have selected an appropriate spot and have the liner in place, you are ready to add the landscape features. You will want to frame the pond with landscape boarding that matches the liners for the liner system. This can be accomplished by either using natural or artificial rocks or by using preformed liners. Preformed liners are made of flexible plastic, which means the liners can expand and contract based on the temperature of the water in the pond. After installing the landscape, you will need to add a water supply line and pump if it is a preformed liner system. This is generally a simple process, but some homeowners choose to have the pump installed by a professional so they can be assured that it will be done properly.

Next, you will need to get some fish and vegetation to add to your backyard pond and waterfall. Because you want to keep the pond free of algae, you will need to be sure that there are no plant species that are going to go into the pond before you begin digging. For this reason, it is important that you do not introduce new plants directly into the pond until you have had an opportunity to gather the existing vegetation. Once you have taken care of the plant issue, then you will be ready to add fish. Fish can make your pond a lot more interesting when they are properly cared for but you should only add a few at a time to ensure they do not become overpopulated. Remember to filter the water thoroughly after you are done adding the fish.

Once you have the pond and the foliage in place, you may want to consider adding waterfalls to add to the beauty of the landscape. Waterfalls can be a great way to add to the beauty and tranquility of your backyard pond and waterfall. There are a few things you should keep in mind in order to make this a successful project. First of all, you should keep in mind that the easiest kind to install is a free standing waterfall. If you have a tree in your yard, you may also want to consider cutting the tree down in order to clear the area for a waterfall and its pump.
